Happy New Year From Our Detachment Commandant
As we close out 2011, we as Detachment members can look back with pride on a very busy and productive year. Thanks to all of you, we have tripled our membership since receiving our National Charter in September, 2008, with 16 members. But it is not about numbers, it is about reaching out to the Marines and Navy FMF Corpsman of our community and bringing us all together once again as a band of brothers and sisters. As I stated when we first started forming the Detachment in April 2008, I want each and everyone of you to once again experience the pride you felt when you pinned on the Eagle, Globe and Anchor for the very first time. And it is always a sense of pride to me when conducting our monthly meetings and look around and see all of the red detachment shirts and League covers as our membership participation continues to grow every month. The accomplishments were many, too many to mention all of them here; the very successful second annual Golf Tournament; and certainly one of our proudest moments was the participation of our Detachment Color Guard in the City of Woodstock's, 4th of July parade, and as Marines always do, leading the way. And we had a very memorable Detachment Marine Corps Birthday Ball, by all accounts it was a great one, the best yet. Yes, there were many events this year, and they didn't just happen. It isn't magic, there is no switch we flip and suddenly everything happens. The past and continuing success of our Detachment is because of all of you, regular and associate members as well, and your hard work, dedication and commitment to carrying out the Mission of the Marine Corps League, to preserve and carry on the Legacy of our Corps . During 2011, as always, we prayed for our sick, buried the Fallen, saluted our Corps and were always there for each other. For Shannon, Jo and Bob, May they Rest in Peace. With the economy what it is we were concerned, but none more than the Marine elves that were sorting toys at the command center. However, YOU, our community, did not let us down. Toys for Tots Collection sites did an outstanding job here in Cherokee County. We always need a few good men and women to step up to the plate and collect toys for this very worthwhile cause. Please consider letting your business collect next year. Admission to community events is an excellent way to help us. It was said that one Marine in the local area made 2 trips in a large truck to pick up toys from the Governor's Mansion this year that they collected from people who toured the Governor's Mansion. Bravo Zulu, Governor!
